Teeing Off for Veterans in Honor of Joe Caggiano

Each summer, the Coalition eagerly anticipates the Joseph P. Caggiano Memorial Golf Tournament, which bears the name of our dear friend and colleague and serves as a tribute to his legacy. We are pleased to share that this year’s event will again take place on August 16 at the beautiful Whiskey Creek Golf Club in Ijasmsville, Maryland.

In 2013, after the heartbreaking passing of our beloved friend and colleague, the Coalition’s annual charity golf tournament was renamed the Joseph P. Caggiano Memorial Golf Tournament to celebrate Joe and his steadfast support of our veterans. Joe, a veteran himself, served for eight years as an officer in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, Joe completed tours of duty on the USS Independence (CV62), at Navy Personnel Command, and as an instructor at Villanova University, where he earned an MBA and a B.S. in mechanical engineering and was a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship student.

In addition to his service in the Navy, Joe enjoyed an extensive career as a dedicated professional in the federal procurement space. In 2011, Joe joined Reznick Government as Principal, where he played a key role in expanding the firm’s business development efforts at the federal level. Prior to joining Reznick Government, he was the Chief Operating Officer for Washington Management Group/Fedsources for seven years. Joe also served as a member of the Coalition’s Board of Directors, where he worked diligently to support our mission and initiatives. Throughout both his professional and personal lives, Joe was known for his unmatched enthusiasm and optimism, leaving a positive impact on all who knew him. We are proud to say that this year’s tournament marks the 10th anniversary honoring Joe’s legacy by supporting worthy causes that support our nation’s veterans.

Since the 2nd  Annual Joseph P. Caggiano Memorial Golf Tournament in 2014, the Coalition has worked in conjunction with The George Washington University (GWU) to fund and endow a scholarship supporting a veteran who is concentrating their studies in the field of U.S. procurement at the GWU Law School. 2017 was a milestone year for the tournament, as the first recipient of the fund, Tom Roltsch, was named. Tom served four deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq with the Army Reserve before pursuing his Master’s degree in procurement policy at GWU. At last year’s tournament, we were fortunate to be joined by Maxie Lawton, the 2022 scholarship recipient and seven-year Army veteran. Maxie’s presence reminded us of the importance of supporting the brave men and women who served indispensable role our country as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. As a result of the generous contributions of our members, we have raised over $135,000 for the scholarship fund over the years. We truly cannot thank our members enough for their continued support of this effort. We look forward to growing the total figure this year, as a portion of the tournament’s proceeds will support the scholarship.

New in 2023, as highlighted in previous blogs, we have selected a new charity organization to support through the tournament’s proceeds. The Coalition is excited to support Paws for Purple Hearts.  This non-profit organization aims to help our veterans and wounded service members facing mobility challenges and trauma-related conditions by providing them assistance dogs and offering its unique Canine Assisted Warrior Therapy® program. We have had the wonderful opportunity to learn how service dogs, and specifically Paws for Purple Hearts, can make a significant difference in veterans’ healthcare and overall quality of life. For example, service dogs can alleviate symptoms associated with mental health conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder, perform tasks for veterans with physical limitations, and promote social interaction and integration with others. Since its founding, Paws for Purple Hearts has held over 15,000 therapy sessions, impacting the lives of more than 10,000 veterans and wounded service members.

Joe had an unwavering passion for supporting veterans and helping others, and Paws for Purple Hearts’ dedication to creating better lives for these heroes reflects the spirit of Joe’s character. By participating in the Joseph P. Caggiano Memorial Golf Tournament, you become an integral part of the event’s mission to give back to those who have selflessly dedicated their lives to protect us.

The Joseph P. Caggiano Memorial Golf Tournament welcomes golfers of all skill levels, from seasoned players to beginners. The tournament is an excellent way to network with fellow Coalition members while making a difference. We invite you to gather your friends and colleagues to form a team and compete for the chance to win some exciting prizes, which will be presented at the networking reception. Even if you are not a golfer, we still encourage you to join us at the clubhouse for networking, food and drinks, and to enjoy the scenic view of the course.

Whiskey Creek Golf Course, designed by talented architect J. Michael Poellet and world-class golfer Ernie Els, delivers 18 holes of boldness and excitement that complement the stunning views of the natural setting. The strategic design of the course presents a challenge at each hole, allowing golfers to make decisions that balance risk and reward.
